THE DANGER OF A SINGLE STORY
My story Titled “Change” takes place in Burundi in 1994 during a time of extreme cultural, and governmental issues. To get everyone up to speed in the story The main character, Oliver, is a Tutsi miner living in burundi in the mid 1990’s. The message that I try to portray is that even when big things like this happen some things change but some never do.
project reflection
For this project our class did research on the imperialization of africa and the history of africa before its imperialization. We were then assigned to pick a country to do research on a specific country in africa and research the history of the imperialization of that country. After that we all wrote a short story on something that happened that could have been caused by the imperialization of that country.
During this project I was able to gain a new understanding of both Africa and get better at my writing skills. I had close to no previous knowledge of African history and my writing skills were not all that great. Through all the research we did and documentaries we watched I now feel that I have a better understanding of African history than I previously did. I also was able to refine my writing skills by going through several drafts of the essay and being able to get feedback from Ally and other classmates on my work.
For the writing we went through several drafts and also had several peer critiques which really helped in the writing process. We went through three drafts and three peer critiques. The peer critiques were really great for getting the thoughts we had into an understandable structure. The opportunity to get our ideas expressed in a better way. Overall the way the writing was conducted made it much more possible to make work I was proud of.
For the art aspect of this project, although I’m not very visually artistically inclined, I did enjoy making this cover. For my cover I made it as simplistic as I could while still portraying the idea and feeling of my story. Specifically I made a cover with a machete on a background of grey fading into black. I chose the machete to show the both violence of the era my story took place in. I chose the grey to black background to represent the fade into a dark time for the country I wrote about.
Throughout this project I was able to grow as a worker in that I learned how to better manage my own time and get a better grasp on writing which I believe will be able to use for nearly any job or college I get into in the future.
